Restrictions on substances considered dangerous or of very high concern
Scope of application
All chemical substances manufactured in or imported into the European Union, regardless of tonnage, and considered dangerous or of very high concern and included in the restriction list.
Exclusion
The use, import or placing on the market of articles containing substances which are themselves subject to authorisation are not covered by this obligation.
Description
The restriction prohibits the placing on the market and use of a substance for certain uses that present an unacceptable risk
for health or the environment.
Some 60 substances or groups of substances are currently subject to restriction (listed in Annex XVII of REACH), such as benzene in toys, nickel in jewellery and other articles that come into contact with the skin, such as clothing zips, or certain glycol ethers in paints.
